Design FAQ

What is AutoCAD?

AutoCAD is the leading Computer-Aided Design software which is a widely used in engineering, architecture, construction and manufacturing. AutoCAD is considered a key skill across a number of industries. CAD industries are currently booming and experiencing increased growth and demand. For that reason, knowing your way around AutoCAD could truly transform your design career.

Securing an AutoCAD certification will gain users a competitive edge in the market as it demonstrates your knowledge of Autodesk products and exposes you to a network of certified professionals which can lead to ongoing mentoring or other opportunities. Once you’ve completed an accredited AutoCAD course, you will receive the title of an ‘AutoCAD Certified Professional’ and receive an Autodesk certificate.

What makes a good website?

The primary role of a website is to provide basic information to users in a clear, easy-to-navigate format. In today’s world of over one billion websites, designers need to do everything possible to make their website stand out in the saturated market. Your website is the face of your business which means that it needs to give potential clients the best possible impression of your work.

There are several principles of what makes a good website that should be followed if you want to attract clients to your site:

  • Keep it simple: Avoid putting too many elements on the page as this will distract visitors from the main purpose of your website.
  • Maintain typography and readability: Use keywords to boost SEO and visitors to your site.
  • Attractive colour palette and imagery: Humans are visual beings and a perfect colour palette will create a pleasant atmosphere and make users want to return.
  • Mobile compatibility: Ensure that your website will load on smartphones and tablets.
  • Easy navigation: Follow the three-click rule to ensure that users get the information that they require in three clicks.
  • Display examples of work: Showcasing examples of your portfolio will allow users to gain insight into your style.
What does a graphic designer do?

A graphic designer’s responsibilities usually consist of bringing to life visual concepts through the use of computer software (e.g. AutoCAD) or by hand, to be used in advertisements, magazines and many other applications. Graphic designers also need to follow certain design principles such as balance, alignment and colour composition.

Every graphic designer also needs to possess certain skills, such as good communication skills, ability to handle pressure, technical acumen and an excellent understanding of the creative process. However, one of the perks of the job is the freedom which designers enjoy, having the option to work full time or part time as well as on a freelance basis.

Instructions for chart (delete me when done)
  1. Login in to highcharts.
  2. Duplicate (DO NOT EDIT) this chart.
  3. Change the colours according to the PDF.
  4. Go to the data table and change the part that says ‘Accountants’
  5. The salary figures go in column C.
  6. This part is necessary to make the white background parts work: The figures in both columns B + C need to add up to 100 on each row.
  7. Save chart (top right hand corner, blue button)
  8. Click ‘Publish’ (top right hand corner, blue button)
  9. Hit ‘publish’ in the pop up box. Then choose the option that says ’embed’ NOTE: Not inject, otherwise it won’t center. The code should have iframe not div in it. Copy the code.
  10. Paste it into the element above. If Cornerstone is being a pain and it won’t let you select it, try clicking at the very bottom of the element. If that’s no good just select the column, click ‘erase’ (in the left hand side panel) and create a new ‘raw content block’ element. Then paste the code.
  11. Change the ‘height’ in the code to 360px.
  12. If you make a mistake or need to make a change, go back to highcharts, make the change and then repeat steps 7-10.
  13. Delete this box and you should be good to go!
